What it's like to be a wife of a police officer?

We aren't married yet but we've been together for 3 years and marriage is in our future. My SO is becoming a police officer! What's it like in the beginning? Always overtime? What is his usual work schedule??

I am the wife of a police officer and it was hard to get used to. He works all nights, no days, 12 hour shifts, and is tired a lot. The pay is awful, but he definitely doesn't do it for the money. We've been together for 12 years and married for 10. He's been a police officer since I met him. It's not for every family and the divorce rate is high. My only advice is to stick to your commitment to him, love him through the hard times because he will see the worst of the worst, encourage him daily and be understanding and patient. He will need you more than he will let on. Good luck!

It's an honor to be a police wife, I couldn't be more proud of my husband and what he does daily. He works long hours, sleeps during the day and works during the night. He takes great pride in what he does, and he's amazing at it. He has wonderful health benefits, gets paid well (but definitely not as much as he deserves, for putting his life on the line), has vacation time he can take, consistently has to work overtime and when he's on call, he will get called out and what should be his day off, comes to an abrupt end. I wouldn't trade this lifestyle for anything. He loves his job and it makes him happy. Remember that you need to support him. Remember that people will not understand your lifestyle (unless they live it too). Know that you will begin to see the world and the people around you in a different light. Take care of him and be there for him to talk to. My husband has always come home and told me everything about his day (even the hard, gross stuff), he needs to be able to confide in you. You have to be able to be strong for yourself and him.

Just came upon this now I hope you don't mind my response. I'm married to a police officer. We met when we were in high school and he became a police officer at the end of 2013 and got a job in January of 2014. It's hard work but I know how hard he worked to become a police officer. It's really nice seeing the before and after because when my husband gets frustrated with the work I remind him of how hard he worked to get here and how difficult it was for other people in his academy class to get a job. We took many risks by putting him through the academy without knowing if he would get a job, but he has an amazing job now that he loves. I love seeing the man he has become!

My sister is married to a police officer and one of the best things she does for him is offer support.  It's hard for her to be home with the kids all the time, and to have him gone so much, and to know the danger he might be in, but she stays strong for him and makes sure that when he's home, spending time with him is a priority.  No matter how hard your day is, no matter how tired or frustrated you are, no matter how much you miss him, try to remember what he has to deal with every day...... Abused kids, car accident victims, murders.......  and be there for him.  Talk to him about your day, but try to keep it in perspective.  Marrying a man who wants to protect and serve others is an honor.  Appreciate it, and appreciate him.  Best of luck to you!

I can't tell you about that but my father was a police officer and it was scary, I remember my mother staying up all night for when he would return and never knowing if there will be a day he wouldn't come home. He was injured on the job twice and honestly it was a good day when he retired.
