Is it best to give your kids a heads up on future activities?

So when I have activities planned I tell my son in advance so he knows what’s up. My sister on the other hand doesn’t tell her child until right before they do the activity because she says she gets too excited and won’t sleep etc. Which do you think is better?

As a former teacher I always gave my students a heads up. This allowed them to know what they could expect, especially if it was out of routine.

I think it depends on your child, how far in advance, what the activity is and how old your child is.  I think only you can make the best decision about that.

I’d tell my son unless it’s a surprise because surprises can be fun

It depends. My son has anxiety so he finds comfort in knowing what our plans are for the day but if it's something that we aren't 100% sure about we won't tell him because we don't want to disappoint if something happens to change those plans.

If depends. Sometimes I like to give him something to look forward. And sometimes I don’t want to be asked 84 times when we’re doing said activity.

I think it depends on the kid and the activity. I can see why she would hold out if her kid doesn’t sleep because of it. What works for you doesn’t have to work for her and I don’t think one is better than the other

Depends on the child and activity. If your child can stay calm and sleep well, great. She knows her child and if she gets too excited and won’t sleep, or if the child doesn’t stop obsessing about it maybe it’s best to keep it under wraps. I remember being picked up from school like “we’re going to Disney!” and I was surprised/happy. I also remember being tortured waiting for planned trips a month away. So I guess for my impatient personality, it was probably better when my parents left me out of things.

Ive told my kids before hand & it fell through then I felt bad. So I guess it just depends on you personally & how your kids take it.
