When does spotting change to a period?

Ive had light spotting for 5 days now. It's not unusual for me to have spotting in between periods. When should you count yor first day of a period? When it turns red? When it's a heavy flow? So confusing!

I often have spotting for 4-6 days before AF. It is very frustrating. I now know the difference because I take my temp every morning, so the big drop in temp is cd 1. Btw, I did have spotting when I got a BFP, so you never know!

Per my fertility specialist, day 1 of your period is the first day of full flow. Spotting should not be included in the count. Could this be implantation bleeding?

I have literally never spotted before my period before. tTc #3 for 7 months now and I've been spotting for three days. So confused! Cd 21, 22, 23. Brown or pink very light spotting. I guess time will tell if my flow gets heavier or if I count this as period?
