What more important effacement or dilation?

First pregnancy 38 +1 went to the doctors twos ago found out I am only 1 cm dilated but 70 precent effaced. What is more important effacement or dilation?

Here you can see that the uterus actually thickens at the top, causing effacement, and will literally push your baby out of your body (unless hindered by drugs).

I was 3cm and 50-60% effaced on Wednesday at my 38w1d appt and my OB asked if I wanted to be induced (she induced me in 2016 with my daughter at 39w1d due to preeclampsia). I said no, that I wanted her to stay put until February so family will be in town and see if she comes naturally. But the closer you are to 100% effaced the thinner and shorter your cervix is. "Effacement is measured in percentages. For example, your health care provider may tell you that you are effaced 50%, which means you are half way to being completely effaced. When you are 100% effaced or completely effaced, your cervix is paper-thin and labor is right around the corner."

Effacement is much more of a picture of how close you are. You can literally dilate from a 3-10 in less than 20 mins (I’ve done it! And know many others who have!) but effacement means your uterus is pushing the baby down closer to your cervix (if I understand correctly). There’s a great photo visual for this. This is great to know. I’ll be 36 weeks tomorrow. As of Wednesday I’m 75% effaced and 1cm dilated. Dr made it sound like there’s a very good chance he could come this week. What do you ladies think?

Dilation, if you don’t dilate to 10cm, you can’t push the baby out. If you push before 10cm you can do permanent damage to your cervix. Usually a person will efface first and then dilate. They happen together. However, the faster you efface the faster you probably dilate.
