Tampon or cup is really your only option.

Tampon, or a cup.   Don't swim with a pad or a liner as not only is it useless, it'll also let your blood enter the water. Which is a health hazard.
There are reusable cups and tampons. There are also disposable cups (and obviously tampons).  Pick whichever feels most comfortable. Cups will last 12 hours and no wet string feeling weird, though.
