do you think that your parents need to approve of your S/O in order to still be in a relationship with them?

my mom met my boyfriend and didn’t like him prior to when i just told her about him first because he wasn’t the same race/ethnicity as us. she doesn’t like the idea of interracial dating and i hate that she thinks the way she does because my bf is such a great guy so far, i’ve never introduced a guy to her before and i felt like she expected me to introduce her to a guy of the the same race/ethnicity so she freaked out, i’ve been hiding the fact that i still talk to/see him from her for her own peace of mind because she was so worried about me dating that she threatened to take away my privileges (cell phone, car, etc.)
btw i’m 18 and i feel like she’s treating me like i’m still in middle school 🙃

My husband's mom hates me because she thinks I am the reason he doesn't go around her when in reality, it is because she abused him and treats me bad, so he doesn't need their approval to be with me. He's not my parents dream guy for me, but they like him, so it's not really a problem on my end. I would still stay with him though even if they didn't like him.

It depends. There are parents out there that simply don’t approve of someone who isn’t the same race/ethnicity or the same class/level as them which is not a good reason for disapproval. However in my case since my parents never thought that way and could care less about that they would instead put an emphasis on the qualities of a person.(If they are  respectful, kind, hardworking etc) So if my parents disapproved of my partner it would mean I would have to end my relationship with him, because they are judging him based on his character and actions not the color of his skin or the clothes he wears. They would also explain to me throughly why they do not want me to date him. But it really all depends on the parents. I mean so far they really like my boyfriend and he’s completely out of my race and class.(He’s Korean and I’m Mexican American.)

My parents were always vocal with their  opinions whether I was 16 or 21 . At the time I may not have felt that they were right due to my feelings for the guy but in the end their wisdom was very valuable. And when I met my now husband they were more than supportive.  And made him feel like part of the family right away. I find relationships run more smoothly when your SO and your family get along.Just remember they have been right where you are and they just want the best for you. Hope this helps.

When i was younger like 16,17 yeah my mom would have to approve. Now at 22, she does not get a say on who i date or don’t date. I’ve been with my boyfriend for over 4 years now, and he’s not going anywhere lol
