Participation trophies?
I’m due in the summer time with a little boy. Lately I’ve been thinking about what activities he and my future children might be involved In: baseball, soccer, cheer, dance, chess, spelling bees, and etc. This got me thinking about what awards and/or trophies they may or may not win. Like most parents we want our children to succeed in everything they are apart of. However it’s not really possible to be the best at every single activity/ task you do. Which for children and even teens leads to participation awards/trophies.
So how do you feel about participation awards and trophies? What are your pros and cons regarding them? How do you think they impact future generations when they become adults? Would allow your children to receive them or tell the “coach” not to give your child one? Would you explain to them(if at a young age) the difference between 1st/2nd/3rd place and a participation award or would you leave it be and let them figure it out when they are older?
