The money comes from the losers. Did you know the state lottery was originally made to find schools and education. Now less than 10% goes to education.

For society? Yes they do a lot ofngood charity work. Is it a good idea to buy a lottery ticket?  No. In the uk there are 6 balls and 49 numbers. Some easy maths let's you know that there are slightly over 14,000,000 possible outcomes. To put that in perspective you are 7 times more likely to be struck by lightening than to win the lottery. I'm not wandering around worrying about being struck by lightening so I'm not going to get excited about possibly winning the lottery.

If anyone has any info on the likelihood of winning on scratchcards I'd really like to know?

It has its pros and cons. My mother has some very very good luck. She is always winning with the scratches and hit a large jackpot on a slot machine too

If the proceeds go to a good cause like education, absolutely. A fool and his money are soon parted; at least let it go to something beneficial.
