Pacifier chewing and pulling out - but unable to put in

My now 5 mo old can take out his paci but doesnt know how to put it back in. Every nap it’s a struggle he will just start pulling it out and putting it in sideways and chewing on it or slurping it and not always suckling on it like he use to for comfort. My doc said hes not teething. Why all this this on paci use ? What have you moms found to help? We are struggling with naps and I think a big reason is he isn’t using the paci right anymore but if it’s not in he’s screaming anyways 😨
