Should I just cut my daughter off cold turkey? Stop breastfeeding altogether? I’ve been told that this will just get it over with and won’t prolong the “crying to nurse” phase. 
Or should I wean from daytime feedings first and just nurse at night for a few weeks and THEN cut out the nighttime feeds? But will this prolong the “misery”? 
I’m done breastfeeding for many reasons so please don’t try to change my mind. I’m strictly asking which way sounds better.

I wouldn’t stop cold turkey because your breasts may become engorged and may hurt. Decreasing the amount of feeds will be better.

The best way to stop breastfeeding for yourself (to prevent infections) is to do 1 feeding less each week. Massage your breasts once a day in the shower and if you feel like you are going to explode at the time that you used to feed, just take the pressure off by using your hands to pump a little bit.
First skip the night feedings, then work to 1 in the morning and 1 before bed. At that point your milk supply will be decreased a lot. 
From then on you can stop the morning and evening feedings (1 by 1 off course), but I felt more comfortable to do 1 side in the morning and 1 side in the evening first. This way my baby could still drink a little bit, but because my milk supply dropped instantly it was more a relaxing moment. And then there just wasn’t any milk left and she lost her attention. 
After 1 year they don’t need formula. Just give whole milk 🥛. You can give milk in a bottle, some porridge, yoghurt, whatever your baby likes. My daughter didn’t like cows milk in the beginning, so I bought formula and mixed it up with whole milk. Every day some more milk and less formula. Now she loves it!

I stopped nighttime feedings first. That way she slept better and went to bed on her own, same with naps. Then she went to feeding once or twice a day and it was easy to stop then.
