Baby won’t sleep on back?

My son is 12 days old and no matter what we do when we put him to bed he rolls over on his side. Even when he’s awake if we lay him in any flat surface he rolls to his side or even to his tummy. Everyone says that’s way too early for a baby to do that and that I need to put stuff in his bassinet to keep him on his side? I know the hospital was very adamant about no extras in the crib whatsoever so I’m at a loss as the doctor and hospital want him sleeping on his back. I plan on asking his pediatrician when we next see her but in the meantime has anyone else dealt with this or have any advice on how to help keep him as safe as possible while sleeping?

Don’t put anything in the bassinet, but honestly if he prefers sleeping on his side, leave him be. There’s nothing you can do if he’s turning himself.

always put baby on back to sleep, but if they can roll over they can get out of harm's way if need be. do not put anything in their crib.

my youngest son did it a lot early on too..as long as they roll over then they can roll back..let your baby be and don't put anything in the crib

this is not too early by no means...some babies can do things earlier than others. heck mine lifted her head up off of my husband's shoulder before we got settled in our recovery room at the hospital!!! if they can roll...then they can fix anything they could get into while sleeping. my daughter prefers her side too. just keep stuff out of the way of your little one in their crib

My son slept on his side since he was home from the hospital. He always rolled over to his side and refused to sleep on his back. His doctor was okay with it. He’s 18 months now and still sleeps on his side every night

We had the same thing! I would place her on her back and immediately she would roll to her side. I was a basket case and got no sleep because of how often I checked on her and rolled her back onto her back.
Her doctor recommended a tightly rolled receiving blanket placed under the fitted sheet of her crib. I now place her on her back up against the blanket bump (she always rolled to the right) and hooray, no more rolling! It feels okay because it’s secure under the fitted sheet rather than loose in her crib, plus I make sure the bump is always below her shoulder well away from her face.

Ours did that and ped said if baby rolled on his side it was fine
