Free-range parenting?

"Free-range parenting is the concept of raising children in the spirit of encouraging them to function independently and with little parental supervision, in accordance of their age of development and with a reasonable acceptance of realistic personal risks. Seen as the opposite of helicopter parenting, the idea was popularized by pediatrician Benjamin Spock." (Taken from Wikipedia)

How do you feel about this? Would you let your child roam around without supervision and make potentially risky choices? Does modern society's news influence your answer?

As for me, I could never do this. I have too much anxiety and I feel as though it is my responsibility to ensure my child is safe in this world. The news most definitely influences my answer.

*edit* I enjoy the sound of modified free range parenting like many of you are describing :) I really appreciate all of your comments! It's such an interesting topic.
