How long to cry it out??

Question

At one year old, how long should I let him cry it out and fall asleep before I go in There? I feel so bad....                                                           UPDATE: every time I go back in and soothe him, he's practically asleep. as soon as I lay him down he wakes up and throws a huge fit  😔                                      UPDATE 2: Now it's just snuggle time. he put in a lot of work 💙

From what I have learned about the babies brain in child development classes... after 10/15 minutes they go into flight or fight mode. without soothing and comforting they will fall asleep that way and it can effect brain development. now, as a mother, I let my daughter cry for 5 minutes then soothed her and put her back in her crib. then let her cry for 10 then soothed again and put her back. then for 15 minutes then soothed and put back. I never let her cry for more then 15 minutes before soothing again. The first 2 nights where absolutely awful! I got no sleep because I literally did this all night. The third night she would go to sleep for a half hour to an hour and then wake up crying and I would go in and soothe and put her back in her crib. by day 4 she was sleeping 2/3 hours before waking up and crying. I just kept the consistency until  after 5/6 days then she would only wake up to be fed and went back to sleep easily. good luck!!! it's hard!

This is a touchy subject. Everyone thinks they are right. Do what makes you comfortable. There are tons of books on this subject. I’ve heard no more than one hour and don’t at all. Sleep training requires some type of crying it out. Sometimes crying it out is just fussing because they are fighting sleep and fall asleep soon after 
If you go in to soothe him just rub his back or soothe without picking him up maybe he will stay asleep that way. Camera monitors are great too so you don’t go in if he’s asleep already

My daughter is 8 months old but my views on this are the same regardless of age. We nap trained at 4 months so it's very rare we ever have this issue. But when she turned 6 months, she developed some separation anxiety for maybe a month or so. Full blown tantrum. at every single nap. Sometimes taking close to an hour for her to go down. I don't ever allowed her to cry herself to sleep or full blown have tantrums. If she's screaming and crying, I am there with her 100% to soothe her and calm her and reassure her that I'm there. If she's just whining or fussing, I let her go for 5-15 minutes at a time. 5 minutes for the first cycle, 10 minutes for the second and 15 minutes for the third. I try to be as hands off as possible and she was back to taking naps with zero issues after maybe 3-4 weeks IF that. But the big thing is consistency. If you're consistently running to the rescue every single time he whines then he's going to catch on to that and it's not going to stop. As long as all his needs are met, it IS okay to let him whine a bit.

There are different options. I’ve heard to go in and soothe at 5 minutes, then put them back down for 10 minutes. If they’re still crying at 10 minutes, go in and soothe, then leave. Repeat at 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 minutes. (Or until they fall asleep) 
The longest it ever took my daughter was 30 minutes of crying.

The most I let my son cry is 15 minutes. Tonight he was fighting hard, so I stayed and comforted him for 5 minutes, put music. He tricked me and closed his eyes but I still walked away.. he cried for maybe 7-8 minutes then he laid down 
He’s 13 months now
