nearly 6 months and i need to teach him how to settle himself. where do i start? 😑

You don’t ‘need’ to teach him to self soothe. Some babies do. Most babies don’t. Unless you’re physically unable to continue this way; just keep doing what works. It’s entirely natural and normal. 
If for whatever reason you won’t be able to continue nursing him to sleep: start small. Start removing the nipple before he fully falls asleep. Two steps forward, one step back. Google Elizabeth Pantley. She has a specific method that doesn’t involve letting your child cry but that slowly helps them get used to not falling asleep while nursing.

I followed the sleep sense book. The first step though is to understand the breast becomes the equivalent of a blanket or pillow you would need to sleep. With my daughter it got worse with age and she would wake 1-2 hours and not be able to get back to sleep without nursing. 
I had to start putting her down more and more awake each time. 
The sleep sense program saved my life! It took Work for about a week but smooth sailing after that. I started with naps before going to bedtime and overnight.

dont mind him breastfeeding to sleep but he stays latched on asleep. so i cant sit with him for 2 hours while my toddler is running around. ive tried unlatching and put him down but he wakes up and cries. how can i put him down without him crying?

My son is almost 13 months and still wakes up during the night to nurse. He wakes up even more when he's teething. Nursing helps him get to sleep faster.
