Has any one had amniocentesis?

My dr schedule me for amniocentesis and im really scared about it..has anyone had it? Please some advice?

Yes had one with my 2nd pregnancy. Never having one again. I just mentally prepare myself for a child with disabilities.  My oldest has Williams Syndrome so that is my reason for them wanting to test.  I wont sugar coat it. It hurts and the risks to me aren't worth it.

I had one later in pregnancy to determine the development of my daughter's lungs because they were going to induce me preterm. It was scary and uncomfortable. I wouldn't have done it were it not kind of mandatory in my case.

Whats the reason why your having it done? There are WAY more risks that outweigh the positives. What information do you NEED that your ok with risking having a miscarriage. What did your OB say? Mine said to never get one. I would rethink it if i were you

With my first, at the 20 week ultrasound they congratulated me that it was a boy but he had multiple bright spots and ordered a amino right then and there because that could be an indicator of Down Syndrome. It was the scariest thing I have ever experienced. I agreed because I was in total shock of everything and wanted to make sure baby was okay. It didn't take long but the pressure and the whole thing was just scary and I was horrified of a miscarriage after that. I made a trip to the ER the day after because I thought I was leaking and wanted to make sure he was okay. All turned out well, tests came back negative and he was a healthy 8lb baby.

I just had one on Friday because genetic screening came back that my husband and I are both carriers of a Spinal Muscular Atrophy. The test honestly was not that bad and it was quick. I was at a large academic medical center and even let a resident who had never done one before perform the test (my maternal fetal doc was right there with her). It was a very mild sting when the needle went in and then some mild cramping for about 20 - 30 minutes afterward. I went to work the next day as a nurse on my feet for 12 hours and I had no problem. It's very mild pain in return for peace of mind.

Bottom line.. If ur child does have downs there isnt anything u can do to change it. Unless u choose to terminate which I would not. Just so you know, many times the bloodwork and ultrasounds come back positive and child is born healthy and there are times every test comes back normal and child is born with downs. It is a very faulty system, that is why some drs push for an amniocentesis so can have more data and can make this system better, but it is your baby and your body and in the end, your decision.

There is another test that does the same thing. All they do is take your blood and they can tell everything from there

I had amniocentesis don't to see if my daughter was going you die inside me.. there's a lot of diseases it can catch that have basically death sentences to them and can give price of mind . Mine was done at 26 weeks with really low amniotic fluid levels. ..

You should first ask and get a detailed ultrasound. .my baby girls blood work came out where she might have AFP ( abnormal fetal protein) that can cause a type of birth defect...and during the ultrasound they looked at everything and my Dr said I wouldn't need to since it looked good he also said that way he always request to have detailed ultrasound before the procedure it self!  So I would ask for an ultrasound first to see if your baby forsure needs it! Hope the best for you &baby
