Belly button piercing

Okay so I have had my belly button pierced for 6 years and never had a problem till lately. It has stared to get irritated and tmi a little smelly. I clean it regularly. Havnt changed the actually piercing since I have gotten it but to a plastic one every couple months. I took it out a couple days ago to let it idk air out. Well I went to put it in last night and the top was overgrown a little so I had to push through it. Now it is red and irritated and hurts. I am cleaning it still, but is there anything else I can do? Am I gonna have to take it out for good? Blahhhh and it is just the top that is irritated.
