Taking Celexa???

Hey everyone!

I am 4-8 weeks pregnant...(it was unexpected, and I was on birth control, so I have no idea how far along I am) and I am currently prescribed and taking 20mg of Celexa, once daily, for depression. I am no longer depressed, but have had the gamut of antidepressants ran on me since I was a young teenager, and I am on them to "stay stable" even though I have been stable for quite a few years now. My doctor has never wanted to take me off of them when I've asked to come off of them...it's frustrating. :( I know better than to go cold turkey off meds, and my Mom has told me that there is only a small chance it will cause a birth defect, but I have done research of my own and still don't want to risk it.  :( Any mommies out there that were on meds during pregnancy, and still had healthy babies?? I'm really worried. My OB doesn't want to see me for another few weeks.

I also take 20 mg of celexa and have been on and off it since adolescence. My doctor assured me it is very low risk and told me that ultimately, a severely anxious mother has worse ramifications than taking the medication itself. You'll be fine, and is anxious ladies should stick together!

You're not alone! I'm very thankful that my psychiatrist works most days in a hospital and always has at least a few pregnant patients. Of course, they're women who are on court-ordered medical treatment for bipolar, but it means she has a lot of experience with depression treatment and pregnancy, and for years, all the babies have been fine. Even better, the mothers were also fine :D Nothing angers me more than a doctor who thinks my health is subordinate to my child's, and I've left doctors for it. I was called selfish for wanting BOTH of us to thrive! It's not all or nothing, and I have to keep reminding myself of that.

I am taking celexa and am 18 weeks pregnant. I talked with my doctor about it all and the risks and he said its in the same class as Tylenol. Meaning very low risk, I went cold turkey off mine a few months ago and was really bad, I wasn't myself it was really bad

I have severe bipolar. It's important to stop WITH THE HELP OF YOUR PRESCRIBING PHYSICIAN. It'll bump you to psych high risk at worst

Celexa is generally safe! Remember if you're not depressed that means the medication is working. It's a common fallacy that you don't need anti depressants once symptoms fade.  Coming off can so much more harm than good. See your mental health as a gift to the little one! :)

Even if she doesn't want to see you, definitely call and talk to a nurse to tell her your situation so she can confer with the doctor and let you know whether it's safe or not.
