Sugar intake while pregnant?
I’ve been searching for information on sugar macros while pregnant. I’m guessing dietitians are hesitant to put actual grams per day in their recommendations due to everyone being different.
My question:
What is a healthy amount of grams of sugar per day while pregnant?
Before becoming pregnant my goal (which I met about 75% of the time) was no more than 65grams if sugar a day and apx 50% of my calories coming from carbohydrates. I would eat added sugars occasionally for special treats and goal was to remain below 100 grams for the day.
While pregnant I am craving lots of fruit and fruit juice.
I fear getting gestational diabetes. Here is what I’m thinking for a goal since my calorie intake is going up as I approach my second trimester:
Eat less than 80 grams of sugar (natural) and not more than 20 added sugar grams per day (for a little honey in my oatmeal or decaf coffee). If I desire a special treat once or twice a week then limit it to 100 grams with 40 added sugars. Those days, I’ll also try to workout more. My total carbohydrate goal will be about 50-60% of total calories.
Thoughts?
My activity level is moderate. Walk, swim or yoga 30min to an hour a day. I burn about 500 active calories a day (per my Apple Watch).
Thank you!
