Scientists drilling into the mantle of the Earth

Scientists plan to drill into the mantle and we're almost at the point where they can do it. It'll be conducted by Japan. Three drilling sites are being considered and they are as follows: Mexico, Hawaii, or Costa Rica. The hole will be 30cm in diameter. They hope to find out more about how the Earth was formed, look at the chemical composition of the mantle, search for microbial life, investigate more about the boundary between the oceanic crust and the mantle and find a way to accurately predict earthquakes. The project is expected to cost around $542 million which will be partly funded by the Japanese government.
