Is owning 4 cats ridiculous??

Question

Hi all! My boyfriend and I currently have 3 cats. We live together and run a business underneath us. Two of our cats are extremely lazy and the third one is hyper and we would love to get him a playmate. I am so torn on the thought of 4 cats! I’d love to, but it sounds a little crazy to me. What are your guys’ thoughts/opinions? We talked about what would happen if we ever split, he’d take 2 and I would take 2.

It depends on the amount of space I think. If you’ve got a large home that they have a lot of room to run around and stay away from each other (cats are naturally anti-social so being able to get alone time is very important) then 4 cats wouldn’t be an issue. But most apartments (at least where I live) would not be large enough for 4 cats. The number of cats isn’t an issue, it’s being able to provide them the home they need.

The recommended amount of litter boxes is one per cat plus an additional one. As long as you have space for those (and energy for cleaning them daily), the cats themselves, a place for each individual cat to escape to/have alone time, and the funds for medical attention if all of them should get sick, you should be okay. 
I personally wouldn't do it because cats tend to get more stressed the more bodies in the home there are. The dynamic can change dramatically upon introduction to a new cat so take into account what you would do if certain situations cropped up (urine marking, fighting, food aversion, etc). And before you say "my cats don't do that" realize that animals have feelings/get stressed in new situations and often act out of the ordinary to signal distress. As a vet tech, I see too many situations where people bring a new pet home and current pets retaliate only to get the boot (or the new one does, which defeats the point of adoption). Just make sure you've considered EVERY possible situation before making that decision. Good luck!

hell no. my neighbor had 4 cats and she lived alone. but she had a big house and lots of space for them. if you had like a studio apartment I would say no. and as long as you can care and get them in to the vet your good.

I have three cats, two big dogs and a husband. I would do it. Kitties are pretty low maintenence.

Pets and children - after 3, the only difference is you have to make more sandwiches (or fill more food bowls). We have two dogs, a cat, and a bird - the amount of work/noise/activity going from three to four wasn’t even noticeable.
It may be tricky finding another cat that fits into your cat family, but as long as you’re willing to put in the work, I don’t think four is ridiculous.
