How much formula??

We are expecting a baby through adoption the beginning of September and we will obviously need to formula feed. We went to Costco today to check the prices of formula and they range from $30-50 for 34oz. 
Does 34 oz mean just the formula in the container, or once its fixed in with water? And I’m curious to know how much does a baby eat a day starting at newborn all the way up to 12 months?

Just don't stock up too much on formula. My son had a milk protein allergy and had to have a special formula which costs a lot more.

Each baby is different. As a newborn my son was eating 2-3oz every 2-3 hours. By the time he was 6 months he was eating 3 8oz and 1 10oz bottle every day. And by 12 months he was starting to wean off formula and was only doing 2 8oz per day.

Each baby is so different so it really is a case of waiting and seeing what happens. Each milk brand has a feeding guide too I use SMA and this is the guide for their milk..... my LO went by this up to 3month (which she is now) she is now having 5 a day of 5oz every 4hour and is a healthy weight. 
So you could use something like this as a guide and if your LO wants more then don’t be afraid of giving them more. For the first few months you should feed on demand and then you will slowly get onto a schedule :)

The ounce size is for the dry container. Ours at nb ate about an ounce every 2/3 hours, 10 days old was eating 3oz and he’s now at 11.5m eating 6-7 oz every 3-4 hrs. Start with smaller cans since they’re only good for 30days once opened

The measurement is what's in the can not how much you can make with it. Newborns should eat about a 2 oz bottle every 2-3 hours. And that's for about the first month. I'd worry more about getting a good pediatrician lined up who can help you join into the baby world. If you are receiving the baby straight from the hospital instead of some point after mom's release you could ask for a newborn care guide.
