Is a team of Diabetes specialist for GD necessary?

I failed my one hour gestational diabetes test with a result of 199. Very high! My doc wants me to start being monitored by a specialist. Is this really necessary? What do they actually do that's different from me monitoring sugar myself and living a more cautious life? This could get expensive for me.

Yes, not to mention you could have a very large baby! I'm talking 10+ pounds and the baby could have problems with it after birth also. I had it with my first and I had to meet with the specialist every doctors appt then go L&D twice a week for a non-stress test for an hour. Yeah it's a pain but if you can manage it  with diet then that's good. But you may need medication and or insulin. They check your numbers and talk to you about diet and exercise.

I have heard if it Isnt taken care of, it canbecome type 2 diabetes after pregnancy so ofcorse that is what wor Dr. Want to avoid.
