Breastfeeding advice?

Question

I am breastfeeding my baby girl, but I have been pumping and feeding her with a bottle so I know how much she’s eating. Today I haven’t produced much to pump and feed her throughout the night. Is it okay to supplement with formula? 
Also... how much is she supposed to eat at a week old? She usually eats every 3-4 hours and eats anywhere from 1 1/2-3 ounces a feed. Is that okay? I just worry I am not doing something right. Help me please!

I breastfed for just over a year with my first so I have some experience. For most babies they are able to pull more milk from the breast than a pump. I wouldn’t be too worried about how much you pump. I would be focused on how many wet and dirty diapers they are having as well as their weight. Your pediatrician will be able to give you the best advice if supplementing is necessary. I would personally just try to fed your little one from the breast as much as possible or what you are comfortable with 🙂

For the first six weeks you should not pump. You should have baby at the breast as much as possible because pumping does not get out as much breastmilk as breastfeeding does. You don’t pump for those six weeks so baby can boost your supply to what they need.
Ditch the pump. You know if they are getting enough by diapers. If they are having 6+ good pee diapers a day, they are getting enough. They should be nursing a LOT almost every hour for the first 6 weeks. This is how you get a good supply. If you start supplementing now, you’ll have to forever.

I agree with what others said: take note of your little one's dirty diaper output. As long as he/she is producing dirty diapers and is continuing to gain weight, then you have nothing to worry about. As for supplementing, we've started supplementing our 8 week old with 2-3 extra ounces of pumped breastmilk or formula (we alternate) after her daytime feedings because she wasn't gaining weight as quickly as we wanted (she was a month early) and she wasn't satisfied after breastfeeding. It's the best thing we've done so far, and she sleeps and naps better.

This is my story...
At her first appointment (6 days) she had surpassed her birth weight and her pediatrician told me to give her only breast (I was also pumping to know exactly how much she was eating).
I’m really glad he told me this!!
What I did was count the number of wet and stool diapers every 24 hours to know she was eating enough.

Call your doctor or a lactation consultant to know for sure. As long as baby is gaining appropriately at the first check up its good though! I took my daughter to her first check up Friday and we found out she lost weight ☹️ I have a pretty bad undersupply so we’re breastfeeding and supplementing. I wouldn’t supplement if you don’t have to though. However, fed is best!

ask her pediatrician. I had to supplement with formula, and my daughter cluster fed. so she ate 2 oz every hour for like 3-4hours and then slept for 3-4hours. she got equal amounts of breast milk and formula. but everyone is different it worked for us
