DNA testing from separate states...

My husbands ex from 10-11 years ago just got in contact with him and claims he is the father to her son. We have our doubts so we obviously want a dna test and will get a lawyer. But we haven’t had a talk with the lawyer yet and I’m curious as to how the dna test will work from so far away. Can the kid and my husband send in samples separately or do we have to go to a lab together?
