Ultrasound?

Question

My doctor dose not do the first ultrasound until 20 weeks. I am really impatient to see my little one before then, been browsing around and found that 3d US are about 83% accurate in finding gender between 11 and 14 weeks. I would wait till 14 /15 weeks. but do you think it's a good idea to get first ultrasound done at a private US place.  Or should I wait to have first US done by my doctor. I'm concerned about anything that is abnormal possibly showing up, but have had 2 healthy pregnancies previously.

Heckler no, I would find a different doctor! My doctor does US at 13-14 weeks...sometimes sooner! 20 weeks is torture....

I think it's odd that your doc is waiting so long. Ultrasounds are not just to determine sex, but also to determine placement of the fetus and other health issues. I think many women have them at their first appointments (8 weeks).

If you're on private insurance, maybe you should insist, or get another doc's opinion. If you're on a public subsidy, there must be rules about what they'll pay for and when, and I would look them up.

I just paid 50$ at a place near by and they told me the gender (15+3) and I got a video of the ultrasound plus a disc on pictures. Totally worth it

My doctor generally does them around 10wk! I would find a different doctor. I had one early because of some complications.. At 7wk1d. I don't go back until June 25.. 
But 20wk?! That's ridiculous!

I had a transvaginal ultrasound around 11 weeks and went to a private ultrasound place to see baby & find out the gender early at 15 weeks. It wasn't a 3D ultrasound, just a regular one. Then I went for the doctor-ordered anatomy scan at 20 weeks. I will be going to another private ultrasound at 28 weeks for the 3D/4D pictures. I don't see the harm in going to a few private ultrasounds, as long as you go to the ones your doctor orders too.

I think 20 weeks is normal. Your growing a baby, learn a little patience. You're going to need it when the baby is here. 
Also, they aren't just checking for gender at that 20week scan. They are looking at all the organs. I personally feel more comfortable waiting until the organs are more developed before getting a diagnostic scan.

I paid for mine at a 3d place with my first and found out her sex at 12 weeks. They won't see you unless you've at least been seen by an OB because they don't want to be the ones to discover abnormalities but I would still say if it's going to lower your stress level it's worth doing

Ultrasounds should only be done when medically necessary. There is no guarantee that the techs at the private places are trained properly

Personally I thought it took forever for the 20 week scan but iam soooo glad I waited because it made it soooo much more exciting when we finally found out !!!
