Broke up with my boyfriend after 4 years

So I broke up with my boyfriend a few days ago who I had been with for 4 years it was definitely not a mutual decision. I was really upset and stressed about it but what kept me from have a mental breakdown is that we would still be friends but now he told me that he doesn't want me to text him again until I'm ready to get back with him. I got really upset because we were friends before and he was a good friend but a not so good boyfriend. I thought we were close enough to still be friends but am I being unrealistic or is he being an ass.
