Should dental care be separate from heath care?

Hey everyone! 
Sorry if this turns into a bit of a ramble, I am kind off my ass with Vicodin this week. So let me get to the point. Friday I got my seventh wisdom tooth pulled and had to do a big oral surgery since it was growing in side ways underneath all of my other teeth. Needless to say it was a long and expensive surgery that would have gotten really bad if it wasn’t done. Thankfully my dental care covered some of it and the rest drained my savings. 
It got me thinking. Why is dental care separate from the rest of heath care? Should it be? What do you guys think?

No. It should be covered as a basic human right. 
The only exception would be extra cosmetic work, like unnecessary caps.

I think it should be included with healthcare. Prevention is key. Not taking care of your teeth or going to the dentist on a regular basis can lead to disease, cancer, and even death. I knew of a case where someone died from an abscess because they didn’t have or couldn’t afford dental care.

Dental and vision should be included as one insurance option and not 3 separate options. 
Cosmetic surgery I believe has their own insurance with it I’m not exactly sure. If so it should remain the same.

It should be covered with our other health care due to the fact that our mouths are a part of our body and every other part of our body is covered via health care. Bad oral hygiene can lead to higher risks of stroke and heart attack and is also a contributing factor in managing diabetes. On top of that a tooth abscess can kill you, as the bacteria from the infection can travel to other parts of your body and blood stream. Those are just a few of the many ways our oral health care leads to other health care issues. Many people can't even afford basic preventative work which leads to other dental issues too and it is a snowball effect.

Yes. You can get very sick if your mouth is infected thus it being a medical condition. Plus there are so many people with rotten teeth maybe making things easier to afford would help change someone’s life? My mom went 11 years without a dentist, once she went she had to take out 10+ grand from her retirement fund to get fillings etc. She doesn’t even have bad teeth to begin with. I was always very insecure about having fangs. People on welfare get free braces but families that the parent makes just over the amount don’t get any help. So they can’t afford it.

When I'm paying an extra $40/month for dental care for my infant that doesn't have teeth it feels pretty fucking pointless to have it. But if I don't pay it CPS gets involved. It's stupid.

Personally no. I have a $3,000 healthcare deductible. My dental insurance is cheap and coverage is great! I don’t need to be f***** in that department too 🙄

In Canada it’s separate because dentists are not paid by the government like doctors/nurses/etc. We have ‘free’ health care here because the government subsidies health care and pays our doctors, etc. But dentists run their own businesses so they need to be paid by their clients. So it would not make sense to have health care and dental care the same thing in Canada. However, most additional health plans (not the basic one every Canadian has) also have a dental component.
