There are various places in the world that contain elaborate displays of graffiti that are actually cherished by the citizens of the community. What are your thoughts on this?

Yes!  I live in Detroit and we have amazing artists. Yes,  there a ton of tagging,  which I really don't like because it's territorial and gang related...  But the real work!!!  I've got photographs of it all through my house! The first one is my favorite,  the second is in Mexican town.  There are beautiful pieces everywhere. My favorite are the ones in abandoned buildings.  That hardly anyone sees.

In some cities they actually have designated places for people to go and dp graffiti. I know where I'm from in PA, they actually decorated this underpass under a railroad track completely to graffiti and it really looks so amazing.

I always thought graffiti was interesting....not the illegal side of it but the fact that some people can make that kind of art with something like spray paint.
On the other hand, I have seen some beautiful buildings or old historical places destroyed by it so I guess there are two sides. If only these people would use their artwork in another way!

Of COURSE it's art. If abstract painting is considered art (which is only art in the loosest term possible - but try explaining that to art teachers), then any form of art that actually takes effort and forethought is absolutely art. That includes graffiti.

It depends for me. If it is actually a painting then yes but most of my run ins with graffiti have been of the gang sort (lived in bad places for a while.)

Public destruction isn't art in my opinion, especially if it's just some stupid tagging. Graffiti on some cardboard if you're good but don't cause public destruction.
