Is taking a birthing class worth it?

It’s helps your partner prepare. At the end of the day, you can’t control labor but it sought of desensitizes you about the process.

This is my 3rd pregnancy my last one was 12 years ago and I highly recommend it. There is so much information. My husband and I are going to classes just to make sure we we have the latest insight on how things are done. From breathing to positions to help your baby move down. Even what to expect if you have to have a c section. What happens after you deliver and even if they allow photography etc. like one rule I didn't realize was no cell phone use in the hall ways and my hospital offers air diffusers with incense to help calm you down.

I thought it was very helpful and needed for both of us. They went over all the different possibilities of labors and complications not just a normal vaginal birth or csection. They also went over the procedures that happen at our hospital and what different coping mechanisms they have for a natural birth. It’s extremely helpful to know specifically what your hospital does in emergencies and how they let you labor and what you can expect from them in different situations.

I personally think it’s a waste of time because you never know how things will go. You never know if you’ll be able to dilate, have an unplanned csection or even an emergency csection. But that’s just me. I went to them and I ended up having an unplanned csection.

I think it helps. DH and I have taken a parenting class, birth class and breastfeeding class. The classes were informative and we got to meet other first time parents like ourselves. Also if the class is being offered through your hospital, you’re insurance may cover the cost of the class .

Take the class! 😀 It was so good for my husband and I to go through it together. My hospital had 4 sessions taught by the L&D; nurses. The hospital tour and labor coping strategies/pain management options were very helpful and took away some of the anxiety of the unknown. Knowing that each birth plan/experience is different, it was good to have overviews of natural births to c-sections. We also were introduced to pediatricians in town and had an opportunity for questions.  
If your session is only one day, I would suggest looking into other hospitals/clinics in the area that have classes that you could participate in. At the very least, call your L&D; ward and ask for a tour so you are familiar with your surroundings when it comes time to deliver.
