But about the story, I think she must have some kind of mental illness, in the most non sarcastic way. To lie like that about pretty much everything, you've got issues: trust issues, thinking no one likes the real you, etc. I feel bad for her, because now whatever good she's done will be overshadowed by her lies.

I don't support lying about herself to get ahead in the leadership, but I definitely understand her motivations. Even if she had great ideas and leadership experience, being white would hold her back. Being black isn't a stated requirement for NAACP leadership, but almost everyone would at least feel odd at first impression (if not outright offended) to have a white person leading a group with "colored people" right in the name. It's the same sort of motivation that led women to pretend to be men (or lighter skinned blacks to pretend to be Asian or Indian) in order to join the military, be doctors, or participate in other professional work when that was not allowed them.
