Birth Control

I started birth control because I wasn't having any periods and it was to be believed that it was because of PCOS. I just recently started having sex with my boyfriend and because of personal reasons we agreed that we wouldn't use condoms because I was on birth control. My question is does birth control work the same if I'm using it so I actually do have a period? Just in case it helps I'm on tri-spritic.
