when it was getting close to feeding time we just put hot water in a glass then sat the frozen breast milk in it until it was defrosted and warm.

A bottle warmer might have the same effect as a microwave would. It might create hot spots and not defrost the milk evenly. A glass or bowl or warm water will allow the milk to evenly defrost and should be almost perfect feeding temp by the time it is defrosted.
