Fostering?

We have been TTC for 5 years now with no success. We are considering becoming Foster Parent's to help the children in need of love,care and compassion and support. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks

I’m a social worker and first of all, what a great thing for you to consider!  The best advice I can give you is to not get into fostering if you are looking to fulfill your own need for a family. It can set up foster placements to fail. Often, kids that enter foster care are going to be working on a reunification plan with their bio parents to return home. This is difficult for foster parents to experience, especially if the child is returning home to a parent or household that hasn’t improved a whole lot.  The foster system is set up to return children home. However, there are also foster placements that turn into adoption cases.  Another thing to consider is that children who enter the foster system often (but not always) come from disrupted and traumatic family situations, which may increase their behavioral and mental health needs.  Foster parents often also have to work alongside the bio parents, which can be difficult at times.  I think fostering is a great, selfless thing to do, so I encourage anyone to look into it.. I just like to point out that it could also be one of the hardest things a family could do!

A lot of time foster children get jerked back and forth between parents and foster family. I’ve known people who quit fostering because they couldn’t bear to have the kids taken back anymore. It happened to them twice.
