They are fine in your backyard, but on a public beach they should not be worn. If I wanted my kids to see your ass I would take them to a nude beach. I once took my kids to a water park, and I kid you not 2 young girls in front of us in line was we’re wearing thong bikinis, no older then 15. I had my  6year old son with me, the entire time in line he was so uncomfortable. When they went down the water slide they screamed and my son looked at me and said “Mom those girls are probably screaming because they realized their butt are hanging out” the ride attendant couldn’t help but laugh with me

Not a full on thong because I won't even wear thong underwear. But I do own a "cheeky" bikini bottom. Which I love.
