Is this rude of me?

Question

My MIL invited my husband, my son and I for dinner tonight at her new place. She lives 1 1/2 hours away from us. We said we would come. Then my husband asked us if we could bring his sister and her son with us (she doesn’t have a license or a car). Would it be rude of me to say that she has to give me some money for gas? I literally drive her places all the time and she never give me any gas money. I don’t want to be rude and say she can’t come with us if she doesn’t help with the cost, but I’m tired of being the free taxi service and I don’t think it’s fair that I have to drive her places on my own dime frequently. What do you think?

I think its silly that you ask for money to drive her to a place that you yourself were planning on going in the first place.  But I do think its fine if you ask her for gas money if say, she calls and needs you to take her to the store or something.

It’s definitely rude that you want to ask her for money to be taken to a place you are already going to... but taking her around town to run errands, I definitely think she should help with gas on that one.

I think since you're already going there it would be kinda tacky to ask for gas money but on other occasions and you're driving her around it makes sense to ask for a contribution.

It’s not rude, 1 1/2 hours is quite a ways to go out of your way, especially if you’re driving a truck or suv then I’d definitely ask for gas, bc you’re going to have to take them back, that’s a 3hr round trip! Don’t word it like, you have to give me gas money or we’re not going to do it, just imply that it would help and you’d really appreciate it!!!

It’s never a good idea to nickel and dime people, especially family. If you were already making the trip then you shouldn’t ask for gas money. Usually that’s something you do if she asked you a favor or you have to go out of your way.
