Discrimination

So I recently just started a new job. For this job we have to do training on the computer and learn all the company policies. One of them is they are very against discrimination. An issue I guess you could call it that they brought up was religious discrimination. They made a point that if someone's religion was to have a day set aside that was the Sabbath and they were scheduled to work on that day and asked for it to be fixed that they had it off and their request was denied it would be considered discrimination. Do you agree with this and do you think this is a good thing to be practiced in the work place? I personally think it's fabulous and do agree with it.

* I would just like to add that the reason I put this up for debate is because my coworker said she doesn't agree with it because "they schedule you when they need you and work is work and you have to make sacrifices in life for work".
