Cervical check questions - 36 weeks

Sarah

With my first pregnancy, I declined cervical checks because I was getting bi weekly ultrasounds due to a really large blood cyst. They were afraid of rupture.

But this pregnancy has been completely normal for me and I have my first cervical check next week at 36 weeks.

Is it like getting a pap? Is it super uncomfortable? Should I expect bleeding afterwards?

It doesn’t hurt anywhere as bad as a pap. Imagine your man fingering you. It’s nowhere near as bad as people make it to be honestly

I would imagine the doctor must not have been very easy on you then

It depends, everyone is different. I had it checked and I was literally crying from the pain. I had to get myself together because I was so embarrassed. It hurt so much! 😫

agree with this 100%...i don't know why everyone says it's so bad!

It depends on the doctor that does the exam and the woman! Some doctors are not as gentle as others, and some women just hurt. It always “hurt” me (not hurt, but made it hard to breathe), but i think it was because my daughter was SO low and there was just a LOT of pressure

Women have different reactions to cervical pain, so it depends on you. I have a pretty high tolerance for pain in general but my cervix is quite sensitive. When I got my IUD put in I almost fainted. When I got checked at 36 weeks, it was uncomfortable. I did bleed a little after and had cramps the rest of the day. After getting checked at 37 weeks, it was less uncomfortable... maybe because I was a little more dilated?

Is there a reason for the checks? I had one coz there was concerns for a slack cervix with potential pre term labour after an ultrasound. But I’ve turned down any other checks. They’re completely unnecessary.

Whether or not this is actually useful is doubtful because really all this does is satisfy your curiosity about where you are dilation-wise, but it doesn’t really mean anything clinically, unless for example you are going for an induction and you need to know if you’re already starting to dilate because that may be a favorable sign that an induction may go more smoothly. Also, cervical exams can be used to detect the fetal position, however this can also be done by using the care provider’s hands on top of your abdomen and feeling the baby’s position that way, or you can look at the baby’s position with an ultrasound. Mostly these cervical exams done weekly are really done more out of tradition and routine than anything else.

To check for dilation and effacement, I really didn’t understand why my doctor wanted to do one since I’m having a scheduled Cesarean. She gave me a choice and I declined especially since I was already hurting from the Strep B right before.

I had my check on Tuesday, it 2as slightly uncomfortable but not painful at All. I was only 30% effaced and 0.5 cm dialated so maybe it's a bit more painful the farther along you are?

It really depends on your doctor and your own pain tolerance. The first one I experienced was painful, but I feel swollen down there as it is and my doctor tried to be as gentle as possible. The next time it was done by a nurse in the emergency room (after going in for pain/contractions) and she was so rude and inconsiderate. She shoved her fingers inside of me without letting me relax and I was borderline screaming in pain. It still hurt hours afterwards. I went back to my regular doctor yesterday and he did another check and was gentle and calm. It was uncomfortable, but it was over quickly and I was so grateful for my doctor being gentle! I think it also hurt less since I’ve started dilating and I’m no longer closed and hard like my first check.

The check itself is fine for me... it’s just uncomfortable because my cervix is very high so the doctor has to be pretty firm to get her fingers up there high enough to reach, lol. The actual touching of my cervix just feels like nothing to me.

Pap smears don’t hurt for me, they are just uncomfortable. But cervical checks are very painful for me, doctor says some women have a little bit more swelling of the cervix.
