Possibly moving out- what about my cat??

who knows

I am a college student who just transferred to a big college 30 minutes away from my home so I have been commuting. I took my cat, Lion, under my wing since I came home for Christmas after moving out from my old college that is an hour away.

I am a music education major, who will more than likely be on a 17 credit hour next semester, with evening marching band practices (for a division 1 football team) almost every day, on top of concert performances, attendances, and lots of practicing. So I am barely at home and I've been thinking about moving to an on-campus apartment or apartment in the city limits so I don't have to drive as much.

But the thing is, the cat. My home is 3 stories (including a basement), in the fields where he can roam free and hunt, and has his brother over there too (who belongs to my brother and sister and law who lives in the basement). My mom doesn't want me to take him because he is afraid that he is going to be miserable if he is in a small apartment and I'm not going to be there much. But at the same time, it's my cat, and he is basically my baby. I want to bring him with me, but I don't want him to be depressed too. Should I take him with me, leave him there, or maybe do a trial run? I know that he's only 30 minutes away, but since I'm going to be so busy, even during the weekends because of football season, idk how often I'm going to be home. Also he's about 6 months old.
