I was watching a serious of unfortunate events on Netflix and they talk about a family member being twice removed. What does that actually mean?

It’s a generation difference. So if it’s twice removed, there’s two generations difference. Which means, your grandparents’ first cousin, will be your first cousin twice removed. It’s basically a fancy way of saying third cousin, or whichever family member your applying this to

Your parent's first cousin is your first cousin once removed, and your grandparent's first cousin is your first cousin twice removed. Whereas, your grandparent's first cousin's grandkids are your 3rd cousins. So, a fourth cousin twice removed would be your great-grandparent's first cousin's great-grandchildren's grandparents. Clear as mud, right? Lol.
