For yarn, I usually shop from knitpicks.com or yarn.com (Webs). Knitpicks produces their own yarn and has a great variety of high quality yarn for surprisingly low prices. Webs is a superstore of yarn, selling hundreds of brands, including their own line. They run frequent sales and always have bulk discounts. Crafty.com has started selling good yarn at discount. I just bought Cascade Eco Wool for a blanket from them at about 50% off retail price.
Local yarn shops are a bit out of my price range, but sometimes I'll pick up a skein of sock yarn to make a shael/scarf if I'm treating myself. I try to support LYSs when I can.
If you're looking for absolutely wonderful yarn, purlsoho.com has an incredibly well curated selection. You can't find a bad yarn there, but there are no discounts to be found either. If you can visit in person....heaven!
For acrylic yarn, I usually go to Joann or Michaels (Hobby Lobby or AC Moore, depending on your area.) Unless I'm desperate, it's best to wait for sales or coupons as they run them frequently.
