Spotting vs period

Sometime I have a hard time deciding if it's my period or "spotting " when I go to do my charting I'm on the pill so periods are light to begin wit but never had a very heavy flow how much would it have to be to just be spotting or beginning of period sometimes it I miss my pill about it jump starts my period
