Crying stretches babies lungs ?

My MIL says that newborns need to cry to stretch their lungs. All my sister in laws say Now I don’t want to leave my LO with any of them.  Has anyone heard of this? the same thing.  My sister in law is in town and my husband wants her to keep the baby to “give me a break”. But I’m worried that they’re going to let my 5 week old baby cry unnecessarily.

Ive never heard that before, maybe an old wives tale? A baby at 5 weeks old is crying because of 1 of 3 things: hungry, sleepy or wet diaper. This is the only way they know to to communicate. I personally wouldn’t allow someone else to watch your baby. It’s not a “break” if you’re going to be worried the entire time.

Ummm no. When they’re that young it’s because they need something and that’s how they communicate. They can stretch their lungs when they’re older 🤷🏻‍♀️

When they’re first born they have mucus in their lungs so its good to let them cry for a little bit, but not unnecessarily

I have never and would never leave my daughter to cry. That’s ridiculous. I’d never leave her alone with them.

Yikes, I wouldn’t want to leave my newborn with them either😬 but I don’t think it’d be particularly harmful considering the baby won’t be there for long or being taken care of by them regularly. I am taking a class in early child development and the professor emphasized the importance in not ignoring a crying baby. The first thing they learn is trust or distrust; studies showed babies who were tended to when they started crying first learned trust and grew to be more confident. Whereas the babies who were left to ‘cry it out’ and ‘self soothe’ learned distrust had a harder time being independent and comfortable in social settings. Now obviously I am not an expert, and this information isn’t 100% true with every child but I thought it was very interesting plan on implementing the information in my parenting style.
