Supplementing with formula?

Hey !  So I wanted to get input from anyone who had to supplement breast feeding with formula. My little guy is just such an eater and I can’t seem to produce enough to keep up.  He is only 10 weeks today and is eating close to 35-40 ounces a day already. He breast feeds first thing in the morning and the rest is bottles of breast milk while I am at work or just before bed so I know how much he takes. 
So For anyone else who had this issue:
How did you decide when to feed the formula versus the breast milk?  Is there another better option? Did your supply decrease once you added in formula?  Did you notice any issues with your baby not wanting to eat one versus the other?

Are you making sure he is pace-fed? That seems like an awful lot for a 10 week old to be eating.

I supplement but I always offer my breasts first. when she's fed for 20-25 minutes on each side and still acts hungry I will give her an oz or 2 of formula. each time we use less formula. I also ordered some lactation supplements to help but they haven't come yet [hoping they work 🤞]

Is this what you mean when you’re pace feeding him? It protects the breastfeeding relationship so your supply can keep up with his demands. 
To answer your question, I tried to supplement with formula and my breastfed baby it all. My freezer stash was running low and I had to work. I had to bite the bullet and pump more frequently to make enough milk. 
At 12 months old, she was taking 4.5 oz of breastmilk every 4 hours. She was eating solids at this point so her feedings were more spread out but she never took more than 4.5oz at a time the entire first year.

I used a sns with my son with formula and it's because I was losing too much sleep pumping. I figured not being hysterical with exhaustion would make me a better mom, and my son clearly needed the calories. he was getting plenty of breastmilk and all its benefits, and the organic German formula he was on seemed to suit him very well.
