Finally picked our name and then..

Erin

So this turned into a MUCH longer post than i anticipated... I haven’t had a chance to talk it through with anyone yet.

Ok, so my in-laws have been bugging us to pick a baby name for months. They even started telling us the names THEY liked for our baby when we hadn’t decided yet. Well I made it our goal this weekend to finally pick a name so that we would have something to tell them the next time we saw them (which was today).

Of course they started asking us what we were naming the baby and told us more names they preferred and then we told them we had finally decided on a name. After we told them the name, my MIL said she liked it but the tone of her voice seemed like she didn’t care for it. My FIL on the other hand made it a point to make fun of it... saying things like “well, there’s still time to change your mind” and “I think there’s a beer named that”. Then my MIL said “we will just have to tell Nonni (my husband’s 92 year old Italian grandmother) that you named the baby something else because Nonni likes a more biblical/traditional name and wanted you to name the baby something like Christopher. I forgot though, we don’t get a choice”

My husband stayed in the kitchen this entire time and didn’t defend the name choice even once (even though he picked it) nor did he say anything to his parents when they were remarking. I ignored every comment that was made because I KNEW they would have something to say. They didn’t like our first sons name either. Oh well.

After they left I told my husband I knew they wouldn’t like the name we picked out but couldn’t believe that they’d be so rude as to pick on the name of our son. He said he didn’t think they were doing it to be mean......... I agree that they weren’t being mean, but they were very disrespectful and overstepped a line.

I guarantee when I tell my mom the name she will be overjoyed to know the name of her grandchild instead of making remarks about the choice.

If you’ve read this far, the first and middle name are Beckett Reed. Beckett we just liked and Reed is a family name on my side and pays a tribe to my grandmother for tracing our family lineage back over many generations. Nothing crazy, no super strange spellings, just a name for a little boy that will soon become much more real with a developing personality and style all of his own. He so much more than a name, so I just don’t understand why all of the rude comments were spoken to begin with.

I’m conclusion, I’m just very frustrated that they would try to plant these negative ideas in my head toward the name we chose. It only fuels my fire to make sure that’s the name we keep now.

Beckett Reed: Due- 6/20/2018 Meet you soon!
