To pacifier or to not pacifier?

Question

My husband and I are arguing on whatever or not we should use a pacifier for a new baby to come.  I didn’t use a pacifier with my oldest bc my mother taught me not to and it work. Now I don’t want to not use use pacifier with our next child. Your thoughts?

Pacifiers are said to help prevent SIDS. To me, annoying as pacifiers are, anything that may prevent SIDS is worth it to me.

I've got 4 kids out of the 4 only 1 really took it. The only reason why I always offer one is because it reduces the chance of SIDS. So I always try to get baby to take one at night. At least until they get teeth then I take it away.

I don’t see any problem either way.   Just if the kid loves it ( like my baby 1) rid of it before 2.  It’s a few rough days but let me tell you....it was well worth it for all the quiet nights

Well some babies just won't take them.    My thoughts are when the time comes you can take a pacifier away.   You can't take away a thumb or finger

I tried so hard with my first, she never really took to it. When she was 6 months old and got her top teeth in she let us CLEARLY know that she did not like her soother and she was going to refuse it every time we tried lol! 
I will try again with my baby soon to be born.. but if he/she doesn’t take to it either then meh! I won’t bother! My daughter really never needed one for soothing, she’s more of a cuddler to help soothe her. She enjoys her bottle but not obsessed with that either. 
Don’t be afraid of the soother. I wouldn’t give it a hard “no”. It may help your baby soothe if he/she needs some extra help relaxing. 😊

I think it can create bad habits, but I'm pregnant with my first and have no experience in this. Just my thought. If baby needs to nurse, whether it is for nourishment or comfort, I would rather he nurse and not get used to filling that need elsewhere like with a pacifier or thumb. Maybe if it's never a need to go for the thumb or a thought that he can comfort nurse without me, then maybe we won't have a thumb sucking problem? But again, just my theory.

I was very anti pacifier but when at 3 am with a newborn baby and my baby didn’t want to nurse anymore but still needed to suck, I found it to be a lifesaver. We weaned at 14 months and I don’t regret the pacifier at all! Will definitely be giving our baby girl one!

Better than pacifiers to prevent SIDS (which is the only pro I can find for the use of pacifiers) is breastfeeding and co-sleeping ☺️ I have a 4yo, a 2yo, 8mo triplets and none of them have ever used a pacifier. I support you! 👍🏽👏🏽❤️

My daughter wouldn’t take one which didn’t upset me one bit cause it’s just one more thing they will have to give up at some point but I also never did the sleep sacks, swaddling,footie pajamas, spoon feeding, white noise, sleep training, baby wearing. I actually had to continuely remind the hospital nurses not to give a nuk, and not to put her in a sleep sack or to swaddle her. I believe they are all crutches that aren’t needed cause later they will have to get use to going with out them but if they never had it they won’t ever miss it and my husband was fine with that since it makes a lot of sense
