Why do girls with boyfriends refer to his parents as their “in-laws”?

Girl you haven’t earned calling his parents mother in law or father in law before you’re even ENGAGED! 
I just think marriage is sacred and special and these girls are making it seem like they’re married when they’re only dating...
No one jump down my throat please, this is a rant in a “rant” group

Worry bout yourself. Seriously.
I have called my in laws just that for a few years now, even before we were engaged or had a baby- because it's just easier than explaining who I'm talking about all the time. 
And "earn", like what exactly did you do? Get a piece of paper signed? Someone can date for years and years, they earn to call their families whatever they want. If they want to call their boyfriend/girlfriend husband/wife that is their prerogative- same goes for inlaws.
People get married within days of meeting people sometimes- I don't see how that is earning anything, and definitely doesn't compare to people dating for years.
I totally think marriage is a beautiful thing, but it doesn't make you better than anyone else.

I do because we have a kid together and we are going to get married. And it’s just way easier than saying “my fiancé’s dad” or “my fiancé’s dad’s girlfriend” who is like a mother to my fiancé and I anywho. I think it signifies a close relationship with them.

I've been with my boyfriend on and off for 7 years, started dating my Boyfriend at 15 & he was 18, I lost my virginity to him, he was/is my first true love. moved in together all before i was 17, we've had ups and down, he and i split up for a little bit he got married (he regretted it after 2 months and wanted to come home) had my gorgeous step daughter with his now ex wife, we worked on ourselves, worked on our relationship, Now we live together, we're expecting our son in June, we just celebrated 7 years of ups and downs and 5 years of an amazing life together. we aren't married but his parents will always be my in laws.

Okay then, and what about the people that are with their partner for 40 years but aren’t married? They don’t earn that award do they?

I understand this and kinda agree. But when I got with my SO, my SO got mad at me if I didn't call his mom mom. Because I guess all of his friends use to call her mom, or something along those lines. I don't call her no mother in law. But, his family is actually really mean to me and have threated to hurt me, and they think my goal is to tear them apart. So at this point I have nothing to do with them. But sometimes people don't do it because they want too, sometimes it's because that's what their partner wants.
