I did an ovulation test to prove that I wasn’t fertile today

So I did an ovulation test to prove to my friend I wasn’t fertile this close to my period, I never really do these tests as I work a lot of shift work, but I thought the closer to your period the more weaker it would of been almost non existent? Any one had this sort of shade and still get their period?
