Stigma attached to mobile or manufactured homes?

My husband and I are looking into buying our first home. I wouldn't mind having our first home be a mobile or manufactured home (trailer in a trailer park) because we live in CA; homes are very expensive! Brand new mobiles are very nice, look just like other new homes out here... Yet my husband HATES them and would rather stay renting than buy a mobile. Is there a stigma attached to them that I'm just not seeing? What's the harm? They are affordable and would build equity fast! Plus the low monthly payments are a big plus! And yes, I'll be discussing this further with my husband.

My BF and I just discussed this the other day. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with mobile homes. It's a great starter home or even for just a small family. I could see where they could make you look "poor" but who really cares what other people think as long as your happy?

I used to work as an insurance adjuster and the company I worked for covered mobiles. The quality of mobiles are awful. They are built with incredibly cheap materials to make them affordable.  They do not withstand wear and tear very well. I would lean towards the manufactured home if a site-built home isn't in the budget.

Where we live a mobile home is still $450,000 some even more than that. So not a "poor" thing here. But they're not a smart investment, you won't get your money back for it. However if the mortgage is less than rent, or near the same price you're paying for rent anyway, then buying that would be smarter than renting if you cannot afford a house.

The only problem with them I'd see is that they don't create equity. They actually go down in value like cars rather than gain value like most homes.

I live in one right now and it's really nice, and it helps that we're in a nice trailer park. The trailer park beside us has people who leave garbage in their yards and such, so it also depends where you get and place your mobile home.

​In the summer, it's terribly hot though! We finally got an AC for our window and it's been more than a blessing!

The stigma behind a mobile is that people might think your poor or trailer trash. There are ALOT of people that live in moblie homes that or not poor or trailer trash. I for one live in a mobile home and love it. Granted mine is VERY VERY old an is starting to fall apart, but we are suppose to be moving into alot better one. When we have bad weather we leave and go to town, because our trailer shakes so bad. We don't have any big trees to block most of the wind like my in-laws do. Our tiedown have come loose and that is why it shakes really bad. There are upsides and downsides to owning a mobile home. I would prefer a manufactured home insead.
