Rarely. A lot of abusers just learn the language of psychologists in a superficial way to make it seem like they are trying to change "Im working on my anger but the psych said I need time to process this I know I hurt you but don't abandon me I need support", use psychological language to victim blame "if you weren't such an enabler I would have quit drinking and you know I lash out when I drink", or use insights about reasons behind their abuse to justify it "I hit you because you criticize me just like my parents did". However if someone is willing to work on themselves and then revisit the relationship they're healthy MAYBE and that's a big maybe to me.

I think this is a loaded question with a ton of different answers. Immediately the answer that comes to mind is leave because physical abuse is what comes to mind immediately when someone mentions abuse. 
I think therapy can help in some instances. Like the physical abuser wants to get help and change their behavior. 
Emotional abuse can also be helped by therapy and counseling. 
The big thing is, the abuser has to want to change their current behavior for it to work.

If it’s actually abusive then it might be better to leave. Therapy and counselling are better for marital issues that aren’t abusive but rather just eating away at the relationship. The abuser can go to therapy for his own issues though, if they’d be willing.
