Why do people care about celebrity gossip?

I’ve never understood why people get so wrapped up in it. Not judging really, each to their own, but...why?

Here in the U.K. last week, one of the top news stories was about a tv presenter who got caught drink driving (or that’s the general story anyways) and it filled the newspapers/tv for ages, with the majority of people feeling sorry for him. My friend got caught drink driving last year and lost her job and eventually her apartment because of it (she drove home the morning after a night out and felt totally fine) and all people could say about her was how stupid she was. Would it have been different if she was famous? Just an example by the way, not me condoning the situation.

My point is celebrities are people too. They have real life problems just like we all do. So why do we judge our peers but idolise those who are famous? It baffles me.
